I have a psychology professor who is always talking about Good Will Hunting, and (if you can believe it) I've never seen it before! I really need to! This got me thinking about movies that are great to watch if you study psychology or if you are just interested by the topic of it. Here are a couple movies I recommend watching (in no particular ranking order)!
1. Silver Linings Playbook
This film focuses on a man (Pat) who has bipolar disorder. The film tells the story of Pat's life after being released from a psychiatric hospital and separating from his wife. I recommend watching this if you are interested in looking into the lives of individuals with mental disorders that are often stigmatized.
Genre: Romance/ Comedy
Rating: R
2. The Perks of Being a Wallflower
To be honest, I initially watched this movie because it had Emma Watson in it. I don't want to spoil anything that happens, but I highly recommend watching this movie.
Genre: Romance/Drama
Rating: PG-13
3. Room
This is a very heavy movie to watch. It centers around a woman and her child who are held captive for 7 years. I recommend watching this movie if you are especially interested in the areas of trauma and depression.
Genre: Drama/ Thriller
Rating: R
4. I am Sam
I watched this movie for one of my graduate classes: it's sooo good. It is a movie about a man (who has an intellectual disability) and his daughter. I strongly recommend watching this movie if you are particularly interested in the area of intellectual disabilities.
Genre: Drama
Rating: PG-13
5. Inception
When I first saw this movie, I was mind-blown. This movie is a fascinating look inside of the complexities of our mind.
Genere: Action/ Sci-Fi
Rating: PG-13
6. The Pursuit of Happyness
A film about a man and his son who are homeless. The film tells their stories and reveals the injustices in our society.
Genre: Drama
Rating: PG:13
There are so man more movies, but here is just the start! I'll make sure to watch some more movies so I can recommend even more. There are a few movies that I know people recommend, but I was not sure how accurate the mental illness was depicted in the film.
Let me know of any other movies I missed! I know you are going to do great things!
